GR2 File Format
From the RadGameTools site:
Granny is a powerful toolkit for building all kinds of interactive 3D applications. It features the most efficient and flexible content exporters, data manipulation, and run-time animation system you'll find anywhere. It was built from the ground up to allow you to decide, on a case by case basis, precisely how Granny should be integrated into your code and art pipeline. It has been licensed by over 1,500 games since its release.
The Granny3d file format (extension .GR2) has been considered an impenetrable fortress, and that's one of the many reasons that make it so good and expensive: $12,500.00 for the PCs and $15,000.00 for the CONSOLEs.
Until now only meshes without skeletal data nor animations could be extracted from the .GR2 files thanks to the "Non-useful GR2->MS converter" (link). Along with Neverwinter Night 2 and Obsidian, Eclipse released some tools to handle their *.GR2 skeletal data in 3dsMax and GMax. My Skeleton and Animation Importer plugin is based on their "3ds Max MDB Importer/Exporter" (link), gently released with source.
There are many titles using this format for meshes, sketons and animations. I'm trying to track most of them, using the game list provided by radgametools. If you own one of the games and you are able to import the data in your 3d editor please drop me a line to update the list (gr2.decode@gmail.com).
Check our Tips&Tricks to see how to import GR2 data into your modelling application.
Notes
A clarification. We don't want to spoil any business. We love and respect the great effort and hard work of all the ones involved in game-making. We think that the tools we are offering are good for game students and indie developpers. It's good to have an inside-look at the work of the pro's. Stealing content from games is illegal and you should be aware of this.
